Make Benefit Dollars Work Harder: The Real Value of HSA and FSA Accounts

Large Group, Small Group, National | CO, CT, IN, KY, ME, MO, NH, NV, OH, VA, WI, CA, GA, NY-DOWNSTATE, NY-UPSTATE

Help your employer clients empower their employees to get more value from their Anthem Spending Accounts — Health Spending Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) — by clearly explaining how these accounts reduce out-of-pocket healthcare costs through meaningful tax savings.

For many employees, HSAs and FSAs aren’t long-term investment tools; they’re practical spending accounts. Industry data shows that around eight in ten HSA users spend most or all of their balance each year.1

Providing simple, actionable messaging at the start of the year can help employees make smarter decisions about contributions and spending. Here are a few key messages you can share:

“Every HSA/FSA dollar is worth about 30% more.”

  • Paying a $100 eligible expense with HSA or FSA funds can effectively cost an employee around $70 after taxes, assuming a blended federal, state, and payroll tax rate of roughly 30%. This framing resonates strongly with employees who expect to use their full balance each year.

“Use your account today—and still save.”

  • Even employees who don’t invest their HSA dollars can maximize near-term savings by contributing through payroll and using the funds for routine care, prescriptions, and other qualified expenses. In 2024, the average HSA contribution was approximately $1,806 per funded account, with employee contributions averaging $2,341 and employer contributions $927.2 Tying tax savings directly to these familiar contribution amounts helps the value feel tangible and easy to understand.
