Short- and long-term disability plans can help protect your clients and their employees from lost income
May is Disability Insurance Awareness Month, a good time to remind your clients that they can make a difference for their employees by offering short and long-term disability plans as part of their total benefits package. This can help provide financial stability when it’s needed most and help their employees remain more productive.
For example, Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) benefits can take up to seven months for claims to be reviewed due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and up to 5 months more for the first payment to arrive. This can leave employees without income when they need it most.
- Short-term disability plans provide income to employees who are not working during the SSDI waiting period.
- Long-term disability plans give employees a percentage of their income to help them pay bills and have money for daily living expenses while they’re waiting for Social Security to decide on their claim.
